Editorial Reviews Amazon.com.
Like other "totemic firms" of recent years, Microsoft attained astounding power and profitability in stunningly short order--along with a slew of rivals who desperately wanted it broken into less threatening pieces. Few really believed it would happen when the U.S. Department of Justice first   began looking into its operations, however, which made the eventual judgment against the company  even more significant. "The humbling of Microsoft is the last great business story of the 20th century  and the first great riddle of the 21st," writes John Heilemann in Pride Before the Fall, his insightful   examination of the epic antitrust battle that began as a Wired magazine cover story. "There are fancier  ways of putting it," he adds, "but the riddle is: how did it happen?" In the pages that follow,      Heilemann examines the behind-the-scenes machinations that drove United States v. Microsoft,  based largely on exclusive interviews he conducted with Bill Gates and his top lieutenants, Justice Department prosecutor Joel Klein, special trial counsel (and lead Democratic Florida recount litigator)  David Boies, Intel chief Andy Grove, Sun Microsystems' Scott McNealy, and various "unknown soldiers" who arguably played the biggest role of all. With Microsoft's future still uncertain, Pride helps reset the tone in a case that will shape  our high-tech future. --Howard Rothman

WESTLIFE Irish hunks Westlife are planning to slow things down after Bryan McFadden's baby is born. The "My Love" singers will have about four weeks rest after Bryan's girlfriend, ex-Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona, gives birth in September but are then scheduled to jet off to the America shortly afterwards. The hardworking group are crossing the Atlantic for some promotional work that could keep them off the British scene for about four or five months. But becoming a father will not stop Bryan from taking part with Westlife. He says, "It will be like any other family, the daddy will go out to work. "I will see Kerry and the baby as much as I can but the baby will be based at home in Ireland with her. "I'm not having my baby coming on tour buses and going to places like Asia."

A  shank solution
--by Chad Westra

A shank frightens many people, but don't worry -- the correction is simple. First let me explain what may cause a shank.

A shank happens when a golfer has bad posture. If a player's knees are overflexed, the weight falls on their heels in the address position. Weight on the heels will create an unbalanced swing. At impact the weight is then transferred from the heels to the toes resulting in the club's hosel moving closer to the ball -- creating a shank.

Correct posture to eliminate shanking

I suggest working on your posture to correct a shank.

To achieve the proper posture your rear-end must be pointing up in the air and not sitting down.

To do this simply stand with the club in front of your chest. Now tilt your rear-end up -- similiar to a pelvic tilt. There should be an arch in your lower back when you tilt properly. Now lower the club to the ball with your shoulders and arms -- not by flexing your knees.

Continue to keep your rear-end pointing up and make sure that your knees are relaxed just enough as not to become stiff during the swing.

This small adustment to you posture should help eliminate one of the worst shots in golf!

Kristin Davis  Beautiful waves, beautiful  color, flattering style.  Nothing  complicated, very simple and elegant.  Why do other  celebrities find this so hard?

picHalleBerry.jpg (50458 bytes)

Halle Berry Sure the cut is the same short 'do that she constantly returns to, like some sort of tonsorial boomerang, and the semi-wild, curly style is the same that she's worn to several recent awards shows, but darn it, it still looks fantastic on her.  Then again, how do you ugly up Halle Berry?

Question
Will my clients lose body fat more efficiently by performing their aerobic workouts at a low, rather than a high,
intensity?

Answer
Unfortunately, many fitness professionals advocate low-intensity workouts as a way to maximize fat burning. The  theory is that low-intensity aerobic exercise training will allow the body to use more fat as the energy source, thereby accelerating the loss of body fat.

While it is true that a greater percentage of calories burned during low-intensity exercise come from fat (about 60  percent as opposed to approximately 35 percent from high-intensity exercise workouts) high-intensity exercise still  burns more calories from fat in the final analysis. Thirty minutes of low-intensity exercise (e.g., 50 percent of maximal exercise capacity) burns approximately 200 calories, and about 120 of those come from fat (i.e., 60 percent). However,   exercising for the same amount of time at a high intensity (e.g., 75 percent of maximal exercise capacity) burns approximately 400 calories. At the 35 percent fat utilization figure, 140 calories burned come from stored fat.

The more vigorous exercise burns both more total and fat calories, but the milder has its benefits as well. For example, many overweight people find the lower-intensity exercise to be more comfortable and, therefore, are more willing to  engage in such workouts. And, low-intensity workouts do promote weight and fat loss. They just have to be performed for longer durations.

Low-intensity exercise, however, is not a better or more effective way to lose weight than more intense physical activity. It really doesn't matter which substrate your clients burn when they exercise. Expending energy (i.e., burning calories) is what's important. The bottom line is that your clients will lose weight and body fat when they expend more calories than  they consume - not because they burn fat (or anything else) when they exercise.

HONG KONG
Dim Sum Dishes

As for the food part of the experience, the dim sum chefs' artistry and ingenuity is astounding, for some dim sum dishes seem to defy all the laws of physics and gravity. Even the standard shrimp dumpling - har gau - is a minor culinary miracle whereby a wafer-thin rice-flour wrapping cloaks a baby shrimp and some minced meat. The skin of rice-flour is so translucent that the ingredients can be clearly seen. Soup dumplings are another marvel of culinary engineering in which a portion of soup is magically sealed inside a gossamer skin, and steamed without a drop of leakage.

Although rice flour is a favorite wrapping for dim sum's tasty "small chow" snacks of mixed meats and vegetables, pure vegetable alternatives have enthusiastic fans, and not just among Buddhists and vegetarians. Try some of the beancurd rolls (chuk) to see why. Or experience the firm, flavor-filled pleasures of deep-fried taro vegetable puffs, woo kok.

Another favorite wrapping is the lotus leaf, particularly filled, as in ho yip fan, with steamed fried rice. Some meat dim sum are not hidden glories: see chiu ngau pak is a magical spicy dish of steamed tripe in black bean and chili sauce. Tripe is not everyone's favorite dish, and maybe you would prefer to ignore the chicken's feet and duck's webs that are favorite in Hong Kong.

Do not, however, pass up the chance to try dim sum desserts, which more than make up for the fact that Cantonese restaurant menus contain few sweet desserts. "Thousand-layer sweet cake with egg topping" (chien chang go), a piece of flaky sweetness; nor mai chi or coconut snowballs; or daan sarn, the crisp and sticky sweet cakes topped with almonds are all for the sweet-tooth.

There are many other standard dim sum selections. Trying them is one of Hong Kong's most rewarding and least expensive diversions. The amazing variety is proof yet again that Cantonese cooking is an art form. No wonder the Qing Dynasty emperor came south and visited a teahouse, to sample the new culinary institution of dim sum. Nowadays in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, the expressions vum cha and dim sum are inseparable.

One solution to any problem of drinking tea and eating dim sum is to go to one of the Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong's major hotels during their dim sum service hours. These are usually at lunchtime and all day on Sundays and public holidays. One can make reservations and your party will be assured of a table to itself (neither of these facilities is available at most ordinary dim sum restaurants). There will also be a dim sum menu from which selections can be made. These will be brought from the dim sum cooks' kitchen area by attentive waiters and the whole experience will be a comfortable culinary delight. But it will not be anything like the yum cha that Hong Kong people know and love!

The Mammoths Demise
What drove the giants of the Ice Age to extinction?

In the opening line of A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens captured in ttwo simple phrases the essence of the French Revolution: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” With apologies to Dickens, the same can be said of the most recent slice of Earth history — the Quaternary Period (the last 1.6 million years) — especially for the many animals that were fated to lose their heads during this time.

The keynote of the Quaternary was change — rapid change. This was the   era of the Ice Ages. Poorly understood factors caused extraordinary oscillations between cold (“icehouse”) and warm (“hothouse”) conditions  around the world. Scientists used to think there were only four or five cycles of the ice caps’ advance and retreat. But recent evidence from Greenland ice cores and oxygen - isotope analysis indicates about two dozen huge swings in temperature and multitudes of smaller ones.

Some swings involved temperature shifts of up to 7 degrees Centigrade    (12.6 degrees F) in periods as short as a decade or two — the “madhouse.” Compare this to the 0.75-degree C (1.4-degree F) shift that has taken place over the past 100 years of “global warming.”

Life in the Madhouse

With these changes in temperature and ice cover came great changes in climate and vegetation. Yet for most of the world’s species most of this time, life in the madhouse went along just fine. For most of the Pleistocene epoch (the early part of the Quaternary, from 1.6 million years ago to 10,000 years ago), species seem to have been able to adjust their ranges to  fit the changed climate with few noticeable side effects. In other words,  when the ice caps came too close or temperatures fell too low, the animals moved away. When things reverted — and they always did — the animals came back.

Then something peculiar happened. The big sheets of the last Ice Age      (called the Wisconsinan glaciation in North America) reached their greatest  extent about 20,000 years ago. As before, the sheets retreated rapidly. In  all preceding phases of pronounced warming (called interglaciations), no   more than a handful of extinctions occurred. This time, however, dozens  and dozens of species died out, appparently suddenly, throughout the   Americas (but not the West Indies) and also in northern Eurasia, all at       roughly the same time — some 13,000 years ago.   Mostly, it was mammals that went down, especially large or “megafaunal”   species — those with individual body weights of more than 44 kilograms (100 pounds). Some birds and a few reptiles died out, as well. The “disappeared” of North America include the woolly mammoth, American  mastodon, saber-tooth cats, several species of giant ground sloths, and a   host of others, including American camels, the American lion, the American cheetah, even American horses (yes, horses, a family not seen again in the Americas until the conquistadors reintroduced them 10,000 years later).

picHawkerHurricane.jpg (3941 bytes)

Hawker Hurricane. [UK, 1937]
The Hurricane combined a biplane structure with a monoplane layout. The fuselage was a braced steel tube construction, with wooden frames and fabric covering. The wing was covered in metal, except on the first production aircraft, and was relatively thick. The Hurricane was inferior to the best contemporary fighters, but sturdy, reliable and easy to produce in quantity. Most RAF fighters during the Battle of Britain were Hurricanes. Later models were used as ground attack aircraft, because they were obsolete as fighters. Some Mk.IIs even became anti-tank aircraft with two 40mm cannon. 14533 were built, a number of these in Canada with Packard Merlin engines.

picSU37.jpg (4853 bytes)

SU37 [Russian, 2000]
A derivative of the Su-27 'Flanker', the Su-37 is a super-maneuverable thrust vectoring fighter. Designed from an Su-35 prototype, the Su-37 test aircraft (designated T10M-11) made its maiden flight in April 1996 from the Zhukovsky flight testing center near Moscow. The Su-37 powerplant features more standard thrust than all earlier 'Flanker' variants, including the Su-35. In addition, the hydraulically actuated nozzles of its Lyulka/Saturn AL-37FU (Forsazh Upravlaemoye meaning 'afterburning steerable') engines are steerable -15 to +15 degrees along the vertical plane. Thrust control is fully integrated into the flight control system, requiring no input from the pilot. An emergency system can automatically return the nozzles to level flight in the event of an onboard failure. The Su-37 has the newer, more powerful, NIIP NO-11M pulse-Doppler phased-array nose radar. A rearward-facing missile system and NIIP NO-12 rear-radar will give the pilot the ability to fire at enemy aircraft behind the Su-37, in addition to the front. While the Su-37 is the first Russian aircraft to feature thrust vector control comparable to that of the American F-22, it may not be the last. A new axisymmetrical (three-dimensional) nozzle is currently being developed by Lyulka for the future Sukhoi S-55 aircraft, a single-engined version of the Su-35. Nozzles are also being readied to make current Su-35s TVC capable.

picF22raptor.jpg (3104 bytes)

F22 Raptor [USA]

The Lockheed F-22 Raptor, to be in service the United States Air Force, is undoubtedly the most advanced of all the fighter aircraft in development today. This aircraft is a true air dominance fighter and uses highly advanced technology to insure air superiority. The F-22 will provide first look/first shot/first kill ability in all environments. The F-22's sophisticated sensor suite, cockpit design, and avionics that improve the pilot's situational awareness all make up the supercomputing power of the F-22. The F-22's engines allow the aircraft to "supercruise" to a high threat environment, thus greatly increasing the F-22's speed and range over other fighters. The F-22 will make use of its high thrust to weight ratio and thrust vectoring engines to outmaneuver all current and projected fighters. The F-22 uses the most advanced stealth technologies involving a very stealthy airframe, internal carriage of weapons, RAM, reduced IR signature, and much more to extremely diminish the enemy's ability to see the aircraft on radar or lock onto the aircraft with IR guided missiles. The F-22 also possesses a secondary air to surface role. In addition to the two 2000 lb. GPS guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions carried internally, the F-22 can be modified with under wing pylons to carry air to ground munitions once air superiority has been established. The F-22 will enter service in 2004.

Tips Kebun

Protect Against Damp
When joining a patio to your house make sure that the finished level of the patio is 2 bricks or 6 inches below the damp proof course of the property. If you don't, after a couple of years dampness will start to penetrate the building. Also this type of patio will not be acceptable to building standards if you need to get a survey completed for selling.

Plan Ahead
If you are creating your garden in stages it is important to try and think of every eventuality. For instance you may want outside lighting in the future, so before laying the patio place conduit tubing from the house to allow cables to be fed through. Lifting slabs later will be far more expensive.

Drainage
Always try to run the paving slightly downwards away from the house so that any surface water can run off. Even if you have to dig out material to do this, it is well worth it in the long run.
